Key Data

Company:Vista Gold Corp, Republic Gold Ltd Operational status:Development Materials extracted:gold Type of mine:underground Main issues:pollution, community relations

Synopsis: The conflict started as management-labour dispute, when Da Capo Resources obtained the mine in 1996. The new management at the mine sparked tensions with the workers, in part due to forced changes in the work system, and in part due to debt claims that carried over from the previous owners. The conflict escalated into the Christmas massacre in December 1996 which resulted in a total of 9 dead. Today, under Republic Gold Ltd, although the situation has calmed down, some local farmers continue to oppose the project over fears it will contaminate their land.
