McGill Research Group Investigating
Canadian Mining in Latin America

Calcatreu, Argentina

Key Data

Company:Aquiline Resources Operational status:Development, Suspended Materials extracted:silver, gold Type of mine:open pit Main issues:indigenous rights, land rights

Synopsis:  The development of the Calcatreu mine had been suspended due to the Law 3981(passed in 2005), which prohibits the use of cyanide or mercury in mining activity.  The use of cyanide is vital to open-pit gold mine processing systems, so this law has effectively halted the development of any mines in Rio Negro Province.  The law was passed in response to the strong opposition to the development of the Calcatreu mine headed by the Mapuche community of Rio Negro.  However in December of 2011, this law was repealed by the provincial legislature of Rio Negro.
