El Tambor, Guatemala
Synopsis (June 2012):
Members of the communities of San Pedro Ayampuc and San José del Golfo organized a blockade of the mine’s entrance in March of 2012 citing the lack of consultation as well as concerns to public health. The following month an altercation between protestors and security forces led to shots being fired. In May an important detachment of Guatemalan police escorted mining trucks through the blockade.
