Manantial Espejo, Argentina
Synopsis: In Jan 2012, a pipe from processing to the tailings pond broke, leaking cyanide-containing water. The minister of mining for Santa Cruz countered by stating liquids at this stage have been processed for cyanide. It was the third serious incident, following deaths in Cerro Vanguardia and Cerro José Huevos-Verdes in 2012 and 2011 respectively. The incidents also exposed environmental concerns central to the opposition’s complaints. Roadblockings and a protest march through the province of Santa Cruz were in response to environmental problems in a general movement against the mines Manantial Espejo, Chilecito, Famatina and La Rioja Capital.
