Key Data

Company:Kinross Gold Corporation Operational status:production Materials extracted:gold Type of mine:open pit Main issues:water, pollution, land rights

Synopsis: In 1990 members of the urban and rural populations began voicing their concern about the health and environmental risks associated with rising levels of arsenic found in the air, water and soil as a result of the open-pit mine.  Ancestral property of Afro-Brazilians has been used for company expansion, as part of RPM’s plan to increase production output.  With this expansion,  community members and local organizations are concerned about the loss of subsistence and commercial land, as well as more serious health and environmental problems in the future.
